What hours do S&P futures trade?
With
Futures markets are able to be traded virtually 24 hours a day, 6 days per week. Each futures product has their own times to trade. What Hours Do S&P Futures Trade? E-mini S&P 500 futures markets are open from 6:00 pm EST to 5:00 pm EST and trade on the CME Globex platform.
S&P 500 trading hours
As S&P 500 companies trade on the NASDAQ and New York Stock Exchange, traders like to trade the S&P 500 index during main market hours between 09:30 and 16:30 EST.
S&P 500 futures are contracts that obligate the holder to buy or sell the S&P 500 index at a preset price on a given date. They are standardized, traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), and are settled in cash. S&P 500 futures are often used to hedge or speculate on the movements of the U.S. stock market.
With E-mini S&P 500 futures you can trade nearly 24 hours a day during the trading week and take advantage of potential trading opportunities regardless of market direction.
Futures markets are open nearly 24 hours a day, six days a week, allowing you to react to global events, hedge, and speculate on a variety of indices, commodities, and currencies to help manage your portfolio outside of U.S. stock market hours.
Minimum Account Size
A pattern day trader who executes four or more round turns in a single security within a week is required to maintain a minimum equity of $25,000 in their brokerage account. But a futures trader is not required to meet this minimum account size.
Futures trade nearly six days a week with Monday's trading session beginning Sunday evening (Chicago time) with the last trading session concluding Friday afternoon. Trading hours for options on futures correspond with the underlying contract.
Trade Futures When Other Markets Are Closed
Futures markets trade nearly 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, from 6:00 p.m. EST on Sunday to 5:00 p.m. Friday.
Investors may trade in the Pre-Market (4:00-9:30 a.m. ET) and the After Hours Market (4:00-8:00 p.m. ET). Participation from Market Makers and ECNs is strictly voluntary and as a result, these sessions may offer less liquidity and inferior prices.
What is the difference between S&P 500 and S&P 500 futures?
The S&P 500 index tracks the 500 largest U.S. publicly traded companies by market value and is a common benchmark used for the broader U.S. equity markets. Futures are financial contracts that obligate the trader to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price by a set date.
SPX Cash Index: The SPX Cash Index is traded during regular U.S. stock market hours, typically from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time. It does not offer 24-hour trading. S&P Futures: S&P Futures provide continuous trading opportunities 24 hours a day, five days a week.
What Is the Difference Between the S&P 500 Index and S&P 500 Futures? The S&P 500 Index is based on 500 companies whose combined market capitalization accounts for about 80 percent of the total value of the U.S. stock market, while S&P 500 futures is a derivative based on the underlying value of the benchmark.
The tick size (or minimum price fluctuation) on the E-Mini is 0.25, which equals $12.50 per contract.
Futures have several advantages over options in the sense that they are often easier to understand and value, have greater margin use, and are often more liquid. Still, futures are themselves more complex than the underlying assets that they track. Be sure to understand all risks involved before trading futures.
While short-term capital gains from stocks or ETFs are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate, futures are taxed using the 60/40 rule: 60% are taxed at the long-term capital gains tax rate of 15%, while only 40% of your short-term capital gains are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate.
Stocks often pay dividends to shareholders, assuming the company is profitable and chooses to distribute some of those profits to its shareholders. Futures contracts do not pay dividends. The profit or loss from a futures position comes from the change in the underlying asset's price.
Futures offer higher potential profits but also higher risk, while options provide limited profit potential with capped losses. However, Options require lower upfront capital compared to futures.

System hours: 6:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Market hours: 7:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Depending on the type of futures contracts you want to trade, you can get started without very much money at all. Just be aware of what your preferred broker requires in terms of minimum deposits, and be sure to check all available contract sizes for the asset you want.
What are the most liquid futures?
The most traded futures contract globally is E-mini S&P 500, with a daily trading volume averaging at 1.6 million contracts. The CME Group's WTI crude oil futures contract is among the most liquid futures contracts worldwide, with a daily trading volume of approximately 1.2 million contracts.
The potential for loss is theoretically unlimited for the seller of a futures contract and is substantial for the buyer. Options, on the other hand, have limited risk for the buyer (the most you can lose is the premium you paid), but unlimited potential profit.
To hold a Futures or Options on Futures position overnight in any Futures contract, clients must have available, at the close of the day's session, the overnight margin requirement according to TD Ameritrade Futures & Forex's requirements for the particular contract.
Futures open for trade on Sunday of each week at 6PM EST. The table below shows the minimal increment of movement for each contract, this is called a tick.
Trade Around the Clock
The SPX suite lets you react to market events nearly 24 hours a day 5 days a week.
