Is a brokerage account safer than a bank account?
There's a big difference between having money at a bank and having money at a broker such as Charles Schwab, Vanguard, or Fidelity. Money at a broker isn't insured by the FDIC but it isn't like uninsured deposits at a bank. When you have money at a bank, you have a lender-borrower relationship with the bank.
While bank balances are insured by the FDIC, investments in a brokerage account are covered by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). It protects investors in the unlikely event that their brokerage firm fails. However, certain rules and conditions apply—and investment earnings are not insured.
Holding cash here is appropriate if you plan to spend the money within a few days or would like to quickly place a trade. Assets in your brokerage account are protected up to $500,000 per investor, including a maximum of $250,000 in cash by SIPC in the event a SIPC-member brokerage fails.
Accounts Are Typically Insured
Brokerage firms that are members of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), which includes most brokerages registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) insure your account for up to $500,000 should your brokerage go out of business.
Both types of accounts can help you meet your savings goals, but they serve different purposes. A brokerage account tends to be better for long-term wealth building, but it comes with higher risk.
This is a common question, and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has the answer: "In virtually all cases, when a brokerage firm ceases to operate, customer assets are safe and typically are transferred in an orderly fashion to another registered brokerage firm."
Is My Money Safe in a Brokerage Account? Cash and securities in a brokerage account are insured by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC).
Downsides of a standard brokerage account
Since it's a taxable account, you'll have to pay taxes on earnings in your account, including capital gains and dividends.
Many people fear putting money into a brokerage account for fear of losing it. And while it's true that a market downturn could cause your investments to lose value, you are protected against certain types of losses.
Verhaalen often recommends clients maintain a cash reserve that's, at a minimum, the equivalent of six months of income.
What happens if my brokerage goes bust?
Overview. Typically, when a brokerage firm fails, the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) arranges the transfer of the failed brokerage's accounts to a different securities brokerage firm. If the SIPC is unable to arrange the accounts' transfer, the failed firm is liquidated.
Let's make one thing clear upfront: hackers can get into your brokerage account. Banks and investment firms have strong cybersecurity measures in place. But if you do not take precautions to keep your own account safe, then you risk being hacked.
Federal Bonds
A U.S. government bond still qualifies in most textbooks as a risk-free security. Unfortunately, because they're considered free of risk, government bonds have lower returns than other types of debt. For example, in March, 2020, the yield from a 10-Year Treasury Note was just 0.318%, an all-time low.
Some money doesn't belong in an investment account
Your emergency fund and any money you may need in the next three to five years should be in savings rather than in a brokerage account because you need to keep that money safe.
If you're saving for a single goal, then sticking to one brokerage account could be your best bet. That way, you'll have a handle on all of your money and it will be easy to keep tabs on your investment portfolio.
When investors have multiple brokerages it can help diversify and manage risk. While some investors appreciate the simplicity of keeping all their investment funds under one account, there are many reasons to branch out to different brokerages.
Banking regulation has changed over the last 100 years to provide more protection to consumers. You can keep money in a bank account during a recession and it will be safe through FDIC and NCUA deposit insurance. Up to $250,000 is secure in individual bank accounts and $500,000 is safe in joint bank accounts.

So, no, your loans aren't forgiven if your lender goes bankrupt. You're still responsible for making payments, the only difference is that you'll be sending payments to another institution instead of the one that originally gave you the loan.
Family offices are personal wealth management firms for billionaires. Prime brokerages allow the ultra-wealthy to borrow securities and cash for investing. Private placements give billionaires access to shares of private companies.

Brokerages typically don't have cash-handling employees in brick-and-mortar locations. Brokerage accounts don't offer all the services that a traditional bank offers. Brokerages might not offer additional products such as mortgages and other loans.
Brokerage vs.
A self-directed IRA or SDIRA offers the added advantage and flexibility of allowing you to invest in real estate (as investment property only). With IRAs, you'll generally have a minimum deposit requirement of $1,000 whereas many brokerage accounts have no minimums to get started.
Brokerage accounts hold securities such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds and some cash. A bank account only holds cash deposits. A bank account lets you write checks and use a debit card. Some brokerage accounts also provide a debit card and allow you to write checks.
