How much cash should you keep in a brokerage account?
Verhaalen often recommends clients maintain a cash reserve that's, at a minimum, the equivalent of six months of income.
Determining how much money to put into a brokerage account largely depends on how much income you have available and what short-term and long-term goals you have. A good rule of thumb to follow is not to put any money in your brokerage account that you'll need within the next two to five years.
So, what's the ideal number of funds? Well, there is no right or wrong answer. It can depend on a number of factors including the number of funds you're comfortable monitoring in your portfolio, your investment objectives and risk appetite.
If you've got a large chunk of cash, you might secure better returns outside of a brokerage account. You could lose money. If your money is swept into a money market fund, that cash won't be insured by the FDIC or SIPC. It's possible to lose money.
Some money market accounts come with minimum account balances to be able to earn the higher rate of interest. Six to 12 months of living expenses are typically recommended for the amount of money that should be kept in cash in these types of accounts for unforeseen emergencies and life events.
They must also have a certain amount of liquidity on hand, thus allowing them to cover funds in these cases. What this means is that even if you have more than $500,000 in one brokerage account, chances are high that you won't lose any of your money even if the broker is forced into liquidation.
Bank sweep programs do provide FDIC insurance up to the $250,000 limit per customer. Uninvested cash left in your brokerage account is known as a “free credit balance.” Firms may or may not pay you interest on your free credit balance.
Assuming you're already fully funding an employer-sponsored retirement account such as a 401(k) or individual retirement account (IRA), have an emergency fund and don't have excessive credit card debt, a brokerage account can be a useful addition to your financial portfolio.
A stock portfolio focused on dividends can generate $1,000 per month or more in perpetual passive income, Mircea Iosif wrote on Medium. “For example, at a 4% dividend yield, you would need a portfolio worth $300,000.
The rule of thumb: A common rule of thumb for real estate allocation is to invest no more than 25% to 40% of your net worth in real estate, including your home.
What is the biggest disadvantage of a brokerage account?
Cons of Brokerage Accounts
Depending on the type of assets you hold in your brokerage account, you may owe capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, or other taxes on your holdings.
Family offices are personal wealth management firms for billionaires. Prime brokerages allow the ultra-wealthy to borrow securities and cash for investing. Private placements give billionaires access to shares of private companies.
1. High-yield savings accounts. High-yield savings accounts and money market accounts are both insured, up to $250,000, by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. These offer the most liquidity this side of carrying cash around in your wallet, and are currently paying rates of around 4.50% to 5%.
Anything over that amount would exceed the FDIC coverage limits. So if you keep more than $250,000 in cash at a single bank, then you run the risk of losing some of those funds if your bank fails.
Is $20,000 a Good Amount of Savings? Having $20,000 in a savings account is a good starting point if you want to create a sizable emergency fund. When the occasional rainy day comes along, you'll be financially prepared for it. Of course, $20,000 may only go so far if you find yourself in an extreme situation.
- JP Morgan Private Bank. “J.P. Morgan Private Bank is known for its investment services, which makes them a great option for those with millionaire status,” Kullberg said. ...

The SIPC insurance limit for uninvested cash holdings is $250,000, but money-market funds — which are mutual funds invested in "cash" assets — are protected under the $500,000 limit. To further assuage investor concerns about safety, many brokerage firms carry "excess of SIPC" coverage from other insurers.
While bank balances are insured by the FDIC, investments in a brokerage account are covered by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). It protects investors in the unlikely event that their brokerage firm fails.
If you want a better overall product and don't want to leave money on the table, then it may make sense for you to have multiple brokerage accounts. You'll be in a position to get the best of several brokers and can decide which broker makes sense for any given action you want to take.
The Bottom Line. Brokerage cash can be seen as found money—it might slowly accumulate over the years through dividends and stock sales. It can be reinvested or left alone to wait for the next investing opportunity. Another option is to set up a cash management account and pay bills with the cash.
Why can't I withdraw all my brokerage cash?
If you want to withdraw more than you have available as cash, you'll need to sell stocks or other investments first. Keep in mind that after you sell stocks, you must wait for the trade to settle before you can withdraw money from your brokerage account. This typically takes two business days.
Unlike an IRA or a 401(k), you can withdraw your money at any time, for any reason, with no tax or penalty from a brokerage account. How the returns from these accounts are taxed depends on how long you have held an asset when you choose to sell it.
Saving is generally seen as preferable for investors with short-term financial goals, a low risk tolerance, or those in need of an emergency fund. Investing may be the best option for people who already have a rainy-day fund and are focused on longer-term financial goals or those who have a higher risk tolerance.
The act of opening a brokerage account doesn't mean you'll be on the hook for any additional taxes. But brokerage accounts are also called taxable accounts, because investment income within a brokerage account is subject to capital gains taxes.
If your bank is FDIC-insured and goes under, you're protected for up to $250,000 per depositor, per account category. Brokerage accounts work similarly. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) offers up to $500,000 in protection per brokerage account, including a $250,000 cash limit.
