Man, dad, grandma charged after Macomb County drive-by linked to ex’s new boyfriend (2024)

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – A man, his father, and his grandmother have been charged after a Macomb County drive-by shooting linked to an ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, officials said.

Shooting details

The shooting happened just before 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at a home near Forest and Phlox avenues in Eastpointe, which is just south of 10 Mile Road.

Tyler Michael Fistler, 21, is accused of driving to a house in that area and firing multiple shots before leaving the scene.

The shooting was linked to an ongoing dispute with his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, officials said.

Several people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, including six children. Nobody was injured.

Standoff in St. Clair County

Police said Fistler went to a home in Casco Township after the shooting. When officers approached, he and his father -- Derek Lee Morris, 51 -- and a woman walked out, according to police.

One of the men was holding a rifle. The two men quickly went back inside and barricaded themselves, while the woman spoke with police, according to authorities.

Officials tried to talk Fistler and Morris out of the home, but a St. Clair County SWAT team and the Port Huron Special Response Team had to execute a search warrant to take them into custody.

Grandmother arrested

Police said that on Wednesday, they searched Fistler’s grandmother’s home in St. Clair County.

Officials said Jaraldine Morris, 81, hid evidence for Fistler. She was also taken into custody.

Charges for Fistler, father

Charges against Fistler, Derek Morris, and Jaraldine Morris were filed Friday by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

Fistler is facing the following charges:

• Two counts of assault with intent to murder -- a felony with a maximum penalty of life in prison.

• Using a computer to commit a crime -- a felony with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

• Tampering with evidence -- a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

• Discharge of a weapon in a vehicle -- a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

• Discharge of a weapon in or at a building -- a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

• Carrying a concealed weapon -- a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

• Felony firearm violation -- a two-year felony.

• Malicious use of telecommunication services in a domestic relationship -- a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of six months behind bars.

Fistler was arraigned at 38th District Court and given a $1 million bond, cash/surety.

He must wear a GPS tether and can’t use any devices that have internet access, if released. He also can’t contact the victims.

Derek Morris is charged with:

• Two counts of conspiracy to commit assault with intent to murder -- a felony with a maximum penalty of life in prison.

• Accessory after the fact to a felony -- a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

• Lying to a peace officer during a violent crime investigation -- a felony with a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

• Communicating with another over the internet to commit a crime -- a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of one year behind bars.

• Malicious use of telecommunication services in a domestic relationship -- a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of six months behind bars.

Derek Morris was arraigned at 38th District Court and given a $500,000 bond, cash/surety.

He must wear a GPS tether and can’t use any devices that have internet access, if released. He also can’t contact the victims.

Jaraldine Morris is charged with:

• Tamparing with evidence in a criminal case punishable by more than 10 years -- a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

• Accessory after the fact to a felony -- a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

• Lying to a peace officer during a violent crime investigation -- a felony with a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

Jaraldine Morris was arraigned at 38th District Court and given a $50,000 bond, cash/surety. She must wear a GPS tether, if released.
